It happens that I -- I wanted my hair, first I wanted my hairdresser to make my face round and give me this puffy hair. And she's just saying, you know, I can't do miracles (laughter) and so I wanted -- I had had surgery about 15 years ago on my neck -- a lift, and it wasn't -- it did not turn out very well. I had this procedure in September with Doctor Sessa and I had gone -- I had seen his channel 7 interview and knowing that I wanted this long face done, it clicked in my mind and then I -- then I did see an ad for his seminar. What to expect:

Surgery time:

Usually done under local anesthesia without any need to be sedated or undergo general aneshesia. Done as an outpatient procedure in about an hour. A common theme amoungst our patients is it’s virtually painless. Most people are back at work in 1 -2 days with very little residual bruising.

How is this different than standard liposuction:
Standard liposuction is done with tumescent fluid (mixture of lidocaine and epinephrine) that is infused into the areas to liposuctioned. Once the blood vessels constrict and the area becomes numb standard liposuction takes place. The biggest difference in the two techniques is right before the removal of the fat the laser is inserted to lyse the fat and shrink the skin. Then the emulsified fat is removed. You can expect 40-60% skin shrinkage afterwards with standard liposuction, laser liposuction has been shown to give up to 75 % skin shrinkage when properly performed.

Occasionally, I’ll get asked by the patients, how long can I expect to have these breast implants? The general consensus is, first of all, the silicone implant, the device is something that can be implanted for life. It’s a silicone shell: it will never dissolve. It could rupture -- there’s a very, very low risk of rupture -- or the valve could fail. But very, very low. We’re talking less than 1%. It is a product that can be left in for life. But if you look at the literature and what’s been reported, it’s essentially 10 years. Most often than not, at the 10 year mark, people will either replace their implants, they’ll have them removed, or they’ll go larger. One of the three is usually the case at about the 10-year mark.

When my patients come in for consultations about depressions or creases or they want their lips a little larger or the areas under their eyes or their cheeks a little bit more large, the question always goes from whether we use synthetic fillers or fat. Synthetic fillers are, the three that I mostly use in my practice are Radiesse, which is a calcium hydroxide product that lasts up to about a year and a half, and it’s F.D.A. approved for the lines and creases around our nose and the upper part of our mouth. Those are called the nasolabial folds.

Then we have another product called Restylane and/or Juviderm. This is a highly erronic product. zit’s made in a lab. It’s also synthetic. And the cost of the Radiesse is about $900 for one tube. That’s usually about 1.3 CCs. Okay, that’s one syringe. Juvaderm and Restylane cost about $650 for one tube or one syringe. Generally, I can treat one pair of lips with one tube of Restylane or one area around the nose with one tube of calcium-hydroxide or Radiesse. Now, the interesting thing about fat, and the reason why I always sort of like to offer fat, which is my favorite product to use, is even though it costs a little bit more -- it costs about twice as much initially -- but because you keep about 60% permanently, I can put in sometimes five to ten times the amount of the synthetic filler with fat. And not only that, but I could freeze whatever I don’t use. So, if I freeze that and my patients generally come back for free treatment three to six months later with their own fat, we just thaw it out, and we re-inject it into the patient. And patients really, really like that. So, because of that fact that they’re able to do it again, and it’s still their own fat, they don’t have to worry about having it extracted again. It’s really hands down the best product out there.

The day of the surgery I know the date was November 30th, I had a 7:30 arrival. I arrived here and I was so looking forward to this. The surgical attendants here couldn't have been nicer. From the day I made my first appointment to the day of the surgery, they were caring, they were understanding, they were holding my hand, even though I was so excited that I said to them, let's do it. And I -- and actually, they, Christine told me, she said, because of your attitude, it really made a difference. And I have to believe her because that's what she does for a living. So the surgery took approximately 90 minutes. Came home, got into bed, watched T.V, read my books, applied the ice like I was told. Their pre-op and post-op instructions are wonderful.

Doctor Sessa told me to follow the instructions, which I did, and by the third day, the results, I saw them. And by the fifth day, which happened to be a Saturday, I was so antsy to get out, I was feeling well, so I went shopping a little bit. During the procedure and coming home, I was put on antibiotics, which I had to complete for, I think it was, it was about eight days of antibiotics, and that is important. However, the pain medication, I was given a whole bottle of those. I never even used less than half -- I think I used them for the first two days, I did, and that was it. So everything went well. Again, I can't emphasize the ice for this procedure. And make yourself chicken soup. I had plenty of chicken soup because in the beginning, you are sore to open your mouth a lot, but the chicken soup was wonderful. I just had myself chicken soup, pureed the chicken and had that for the first three days, and after that, I was fine. Actually, we went out to dinner on Sunday. So that was the sixth day after the surgery, went out for dinner.

I returned to work after nine days and I was so anxious to get to work to find out the responses of my co-workers and colleagues. The responses that I did receive were wonderful. Just what I was hoping. Wow, you look rested. That vacation was something you really needed. Are you changing your hair color? What are you doing with your eyes? Boy, every time I see you, you're looking younger and younger. Yes!

I accomplished exactly what I hoped would be the response from the face lift, which was, I'm looking good, something's different, can't quite put my finger on it, you look younger, you look rested, you look just really good. And again, thrilled with Doctor Sessa. His expertise, his knowledge, and his artistry in making me feel like the way I was hoping I would feel.

And I now am spreading the word about Doctor Sessa in town. I think he's like Sarasota's secret here and I'm going to make sure that the word gets out on exactly what he does and I'm proof, so the word will be spread about Doctor Sessa.

The laser is -- the recovery from the laser work is tough because you have to put this vaseline-type material on your face and it's gooey and it's awful and it's -- and you have to keep that on and it's tough and at night and so forth. But coming home from surgery, you have to sleep with -- sitting up, more or less sitting up with your head raised. And I think if you practice that a little before you have your surgery, that might be what to do. And just, practice either having a pillow around you or see how you're going to -- or in your lounge chair and see how you're going to do that instead of have all that work to decide when you get home and know how you're gonna sleep sitting up. That's the, that's the hard part. Pain -- the pain is, there's no, there was no, I didn't have any pain.

I did take pain pills when I got home, but I did not -- I didn't know if I needed them or not. I just took them because I was supposed to take them. I was just avoid pain before I got it, if I did. But I didn't have any and I don't know if it might have been the medication or if I just didn't have any. But I don't know if I think, I think I stayed on those two days and I said I'm going to try it, try not having, taking that medication because I didn't want to take it anyway. And no pain. It changed -- from the laser treatment, it's like a sunburn and then when it's ready to peel, it itches and the itching drives you crazy, but it's worth it.

People come in, and they’re concerned about wrinkles on their forehead or deep creases in around here, they call them their elevens or the sort of crows feet on the sides of their eyes. I believe that a neurotoxin, which is Botox, which I use mostly -- and there is another product out there called Disport -- and that has shown to be very safe and effective as well. But a neurotoxin is really the best thing that you could use.

Now, what is Botox or how does this work? It’s a purified protein. But what it does is this material stops your nerve endings from actually interacting with the muscle fibers. So, it creates a blockade there right at that juncture, and by blockading that, the muscle isn’t allowed to contract. So, if the muscle doesn’t contract, it doesn’t form the wrinkle. And over time, if you use it enough, it actually atrophies, and it shrinks, and the wrinkle becomes less and less apparent. However, that usually is somewhere between four to six months. So, every four to six months, you really need to do something, and you’ll slowly notice the wrinkles starting to come back. A Botox treatment generally costs between $200-$400, and that will treat your forehead, this area here called the glabella, and/or around your eyes.

After the laser lipo procedure that Dr. Sessa did for me that day-- I did choose to do it wide awake. I had no pre-meds. I had no Valium, no nothing. I wanted to know totally what was going on. During that procedure, it was very interesting to be able to see and hear what was going on and-- it was just interesting. It was very different from anything I've ever had done before. I think immediately after the procedure I was able to walk out and get into my husband's truck. We drove through Wendy's to get something to eat and I went home-- with the kit that they give you and the instructions of what to do for the rest of that day. He did give me a prescription for pain medication. He gave me 10 tablets and, I think, overall I took four. I just didn't need them. It just didn't hurt. It just wasn't that bad at all.

A lot of times during my consults, people will ask me, well, doctor, should I have the injectable facelift with fat or would I be better off getting the Smartlift? And essentially, this is a patient-by-patient treatment plan. If they just need a little bit of volume, but they don’t have really heavy jowls or loose skin on their neck or muscle showing on their neck, then the fat grafting would be wonderful because all they need is a little bit of volume. But if they actually need tissue to be transposed or they’ve lost a lot of the elasticity in their skin, and they have sort of bands and muscles showing or a lot of loose skin under here or over here, the jowl area, then really the only thing that you can do is move tissue.

And when you move tissue -- and what I do is the smartlift -- and you know, you really can’t compare the results, quite frankly. But for younger patients that are starting to see the early signs of aging, fat transfer grafting is a wonderful way to start.

Sometimes I get asked the question by my patients, how do you get the fat from my tummy or my legs or my bottom and how do you get it into my face? Well, it’s actually quite simple. First, we do the procedure. We get the area that we’re going to take the fat from very, very numb. So, this is done awake, obviously. And we use very, very small liposuction canuals that are about this big, and it’s only about a millimeter in diameter, so it’s very, very small. Maybe slightly larger than that. But we extract the fat through small one to two millimeter pokes in the skin, usually in well-hidden places like the belly button or skin creases, and we extract the fat under negative pressure. So, we remove it.

We don’t need a whole lot, so it’s very, very unlikely that we would create a divit or a hole or some sort of cosmetic defect from taking the fat, and most people don’t actually mind that you’re removing fat. They actually like that idea. We take that fat, we then put it into a centrifuge, which separates the plasma from the fat, we then take that
fat, and we put it into a syringe, and it’s just like getting any other type of filler, and it’s injected with a needle. So, it’s not like we have to make an incision in your face or anything like that. It’s just little pokes with a needle, and we inject the fat just like you would inject any other type of filler like a Radiesse or Juviderm or any type of dermal filler that you might hear of, except this is your own personal fat.

Oftentimes during my consultations, I get the question, what can I do about the creases around my face or the hollowness under my eyes or the cheeks or the folds around our nose or the mouth or even our lips? There’s two reasons why this is so important right now. Number one, because it is our own body and it is our own substance. I chose Dr. Sessa and Sarasota Surgical Arts very carefully. I had already been, previously, to two other surgeons-- one in Tampa and one in St. Pete. I live in Palmetto so I decided to do some research and I called a friend of mine that's a nurse here at Manatee Memorial. And she said, I've heard of Sarasota Surgical Arts in a very good way. So why don't you check them out? I went on to their website and I check out and I looked at all of Dr. Sessa's interviews that he'd had and I couldn't find anything majorly negative. The reason that I came to Dr. Sessa not only was cosmetic but it was necessary. Back in 1998 I was in a motorcycle accident that the bike landed on top of me. And when the bike landed on me, it did a lot of soft tissue damage-- it didn't break any bones. So, over the period of years the skin has gotten full of the little spider veins and it's gotten to where there was a divot where the bike landed that, no matter how much I work out or anything I could do, I couldn't do anything about that. The fat pockets had formed above that damaged area of my leg--- the soft tissue damage. And working out four or five days a week and doing everything aerobically I could to get rid of that. How do we know when to use Botox or Disport, which are purified proteins? Well, when you look in the mirror, if you have resting wrinkles in your forehead or in this area called the glabella or around your eyes, meaning when you’re not squinting or raising your eyes, if they’re resting wrinkles and lines, Botox will rarely help that. It may help smooth it a little bit, but you’ll always have that line there. The skin has memory.

So, what I generally recommend if I notice you have passive
wrinkles, then it’s good to treat it with a combined approach. So, we
don’t want to aggravate it and make it worse. So, we do give a little
bit of Botox, but you really need something to help push that wrinkle
out and flatten it. So, instead of being cavitated in, now it’s flat
with the rest of the skin. So, we use a filler, something like Radiesse,
Restylane, and/or fat.

But in terms of active wrinkling, meaning if you have fairly
unwrinkled skin or some mild wrinkling, but it really bothers you, they
get really deep when you raise your forehead or when you smile you have
really deep wrinkles, then that’s perfect for Botox or Disport. That’s

Sometimes during consultations, I’ll be asked what is a stem cell facelift or a liquid face lift. Well, I’ll talk about the liquid facelift first. Liquid facelift is essentially using synthetic products in the areas around the jaw, the jowl, and the cheek area to give the appearance of lifting the skin and adding volume. Of course, as we age, we lose volume, our skin thins, and it starts to sag. So, we could replace that volume. It will, in turn, push things up a little bit to a certain extent, and that is where we come up with the term “liquid facelift.” To use a synthetic product that will go away in about a year, maybe a year and a half, we have to use a lot of product, and the typical liquid facelift if we use Restylane would be about four or five thousand dollars. Or if we use Radiesse, it would be about $6,000 with the liquid facelift.
In terms of the stem cell facelift, this is where it’s really getting interesting right now because the technology’s evolving right now in cosmetic surgery where we’re actually trying to keep and allow for a growth of more of the stem cells. So, if we could keep more of the stem cells in the fat, then it would produce more collagen-producing stem cells and thus the stem cell facelift. Stem cell facelift just merely refers to the fact of fat transfer and/or grafting to the face. So, we’re adding volume to the face and, in turn, hoping that a lot of
these stem cells will reproduce and turn into collagen-producing stem cells. But also, it’s essentially a liquid facelift but just using fat.

The way that I usually charge for fat grafting is, well, number one, let me say that all of my prices are on my website. I wholeheartedly believe that I have nothing to hide in terms of what I’m going to charge. But in terms of fat grafting, the real labor is in extracting the fat. Once I get the fat, it’s very easy to go from area to area. But I do charge per area for fat grafting. It’s $2,000 for the first area. Now of course, each area is both sides. So, let’s say that around the nose is the first area. Then, if they wanted their lips done, that would be a second area, and that is $450 more. If then they want under their eyes done, that would be a third area, and that would be $450 more. So, depending how many areas you get treated is how much it costs.

But it’s $2,000 for the first area, $450 for each additional area. So,
to generally do two to three areas, it essentially costs about $3,000
for fat grafting. But when you look at the overall price versus what
you’re getting, number one, you’re getting your own substance, number
two, it’s not a synthetic product. You pay a lot more money for a
synthetic product than you do for the fat.

When I was 20 and I decided I was going to have a facelift when I needed one. So the joke with my husband was, I told him, okay. I say, I don't need diamonds. I don't need mink coats. I just want a maid and a facelift when I need one. So, that was a big do. And it took a long time, because I'm 68 years old, and that's when I decided I needed one, when I all of a sudden, I looked in the mirror, and I didn't know who the hell I was. Excuse my language. I didn't know who I was. I looked tired. And I didn't feel tired, but I just always looked tired. So I figured, okay, now's the time for me to start the process.

I was looking for surgeon. There was someone I had gone to that I, you know, gave me an estimate and everything. And then I started looking up the credentials and everything, and they weren't right. I wanted a Board Certified doctor. So, I was looking for a Board Certified doctor, and I had a lot of friends that went to the doctors in town here, got very good references from them, too. And I just looked and spoke to a couple of them. And some of them, you know, just wanted to do everything! They wanted everything! I didn't want to look like I was in my 30s or 40s. I didn't think-- I wanted the expression still in my face. You know, I didn't want all this Botox and everything so that you can't move your eyebrows or anything like that. And so, I just wanted to look my age or somewhere thereabouts. Just refreshed. Not tired. Just kind of confident and happy and not angry.

I made an appointment with him, and you know, we had a talk. I told him what I was looking for, and he told me what he thought he could do and gave me a whole hour, you know. Just took his time. And then I didn't feel rushed. I didn't feel like I was being sold any hard sell or anything. He was just a-- you're giving someone your face. You better trust them and feel comfortable with them. That's how I felt. It was just very simple.

I think maybe the whole process was-- out of the operation was, I mean, maybe 2 hours. A little more than that. I think 4 hours I was here and home. And I had to do certain things like put Neosporin on the scars. And what I also liked about it, the scars did not extend into my scalp. They just came in the front here and just behind the ear. So, it wasn't that invasive, and it didn't hurt. And when I was done, there was no pain. I think I took the pain pills for maybe one night, and that was it. Absolutely no pain. And I healed rather quickly.

There is no scarring at all. Absolutely nothing. So, I'm very happy. And it's four months out, and I'm still happy! And I don't look tired anymore, you know, so it accomplished what I wanted.

So, oftentimes during consultations, I usually get the question of, "Doctor, if I have the Smart Lift done, where am I going have my scars?" And I really take great pride in telling people this, because I know, and I'm very confident that I can give them very, very esthetic scars. I take great pride in that aspect of facial cosmetic surgery and in the Smart Lift itself. First of all, there's a small hidden scar that's just underneath our chin. After that, there are also some hidden scars around our ears. These are in well-hidden places. It starts out in the sideburn, and I create the scar in such a fashion that, after about a month, hair from our sideburns actually grows through the scar itself, which inevitably becomes invisible. Then we continue around certain folds of the ear creases, and we're able to keep it such and contour these scars so that they're very, very well hidden. Then we continue around the ear in the ear lobe, and it stops just behind the ear lobe. Now, by doing that, by stopping there, I realized that in the conventional face lift, that scar would continue up to a certain point behind the ear and then down into the hair line. And what I've realized is that I could avoid all of that surgery behind that part of the ear and avoid all the potential problems of scarring, of swelling, of increased and prolonged post-operative problems. But the biggest thing that it avoids is the potential for hair loss. People really hate that.

And with the Smart Lift, I've avoided that whole area, and that really is one of the things that people love about this procedure is that they don't have to worry about having hair loss behind their ear or, if they wear their hair up - a lot of my patients like to wear their hair up. They're very active. They want to know, Doc, when can I go and start playing tennis again? Or I ballroom dance or I play racquetball or I like to use the gym, and I take great pride in the fact that these people, knowing that in 3 to 5 or even 6 days maybe, that they are back to almost a normal routine where the swelling is almost all gone, and they're doing great, and they love it. And when they come back after their 5-day, 6-day post-op period to have their sutures removed, they are so happy and overjoyed, because it's just a complete transformation. And in that transformation, it's like they left the old person behind, and now there's this new person, and they just can't wait to get back into their old routine of playing golf or playing tennis or going out dancing or dining. And you know, one of the great things is seeing the husband's reactions from this. Most of my patients are female and seeing the reaction from the husbands, it's like, wow, you know, I got my wife from 30 years ago back. And it's just a wonderful thing to see, and it really makes me happy to see that.

Conventional Face Lift vs Smartlift - Bradenton FL

So, the way that I started with the Smart Lift was after doing hundreds of conventional face lifts and seeing the patients post-operatively and seeing-- sometimes they had a little bit more difficulty with the recovery period. Sometimes, it was a little bit more extended. Sometimes people weren't real happy with the large scars that were left behind after a conventional facelift. So, over time, I started to realize that I didn't have to do this much surgery to give people the same result. So, I started to reduce the scar and give people smaller and smaller scars. Now, where I am now with the Smart Lift, I'm giving people about a 50% reduction in the scar, and that equates exponentially to the post-operative period where I'm seeing people at 4 and 5 days going back to work where they have some minimal bruising. It takes time to really convince yourself that you look different in the mirror. And over the past few years, I've seen myself change. I was always in a hurry to put make up on, and I'd say, hmm, what's happening down here? And I'd pass it off and get up and go about my business. And then some things happened, and I became more aware of myself and thought, hmm, one day I looked in the mirror, and it was like my chin isn't there anymore the way it used to be. And I kind of pondered upon that for a little bit, and I tried to fix it with make up, and it didn't work very well. And I reached to my neck, and I said, hmm, what do they call that, like little turkey things that go on down there? So, I decided that I needed something done. Facelift, Minilift - Before and After Cosmetic Surgery - Bradenton FL

About 7 years ago, I lost 65 pounds which left my skin somewhat saggy, and it's something that's bothered me for several years. And having turned 50 recently, I just felt that I needed to do something. I found myself trying to hide my chin when I was out because I had the sagging in the neck and trying to lift my face. And when I was talking to people because I was just embarrassed-- I felt like I looked much older. I just felt like I looked old. But inside, I'm much younger than I appeared, and I just needed to do something for myself. So, I did some research and had looked into the Smart Lift, and Doctor Sessa was on Channel 7.

I was just very impressed. So, I got online and signed up for his seminar and came in, and I was just impressed with the before-and-after pictures and the presentation, and I followed up, came in and had a consultation and, a few weeks later, had the surgery. He just made me feel at ease and explained the procedure, what he was going to do, thoroughly and was just wonderful. He made recommendations on what I have done. He took some before pictures and has followed me through and taking after pictures now, too.

I'm happy, and I look in the mirror, and I no longer have the desire to pull my cheeks back to see what I'd look like before or after, before and after. My neck, I feel like I've lost years off of that, and it's something I could not have accomplished with just exercise. There was nothing that could fix this besides the surgery. So, I'm elated that I did it. And the little bit of pain I went through was nothing compared to the results. It was well worth it.

Everyone keeps asking me what I've done different with my hair, because I haven't told very many people that I've had the surgery, but the people that I have told, they, you know, want to know who it is and his card. I've given his card out and made recommendations. I even have a girlfriend up in Maryland that wants to come down and have him do it. But people that I have not told, they just think I've done something different with my hair, which is what I wanted. I wanted a natural look. Not one to where my face looked stretched or anything like that. So, those are the people that kind of look at me and say, what did you do different with your hair? And I never tell. I'll never tell.

Because the Smart Lift takes so little time, an hour-and-a-half to two hours for the surgery, it's very easy to combine it with upper and lower eye lid surgeries or brow lift or facial lasering resurfacing to help with wrinkle reduction or with removing sun spots, and it's really nice, because instead of going an hour-and-a-half to two hours, if you just add on another half an hour or even another 45 minutes, we can efficiently combine it with a plethora of other procedures that, instead of having to come back for another procedure and still two and a half hours at most, maybe three hours, but it's far from-- traditionally, if you combine a lot of procedures, you'd be looking at five, six, seven hours of surgery. Mini Facelift and Smartlift - What Happens After the Procedure? Bradenton FL

The post-op care for the smart lift is really quite simple. It's very similar to any face-lift procedure that you would experience. Any time you have surgery, you want to make sure that you keep some compression over the first few days. And that's really the important thing. I do require my patients to wear a simple compressive garment on the face. It doesn't cover your face, but it's mostly to help with the neck and the jaw line, and it's really just to minimize the amount of swelling that you'll experience post-operatively. Even though it's minimal, we want to help it as much as possible.

So, most of my patients actually do quite well with the small bandage that fits around their jaw line, and that's only required to be worn for the first four or five days. After that, we usually take our stitches out at about five days after your surgery. Most of my patients do very well. Most of their swelling is completely gone. Usually by the fifth day, they are already starting their normal activities, out bike riding, or walking, or going shopping, or doing their normal activities. And at that point, usually I do recommend wearing the post-operative dressing for as long as you would like, as long as you feel comfortable. But the post-operative dressing is not going to affect the result. The surgery is not gonna fall.

People sometimes say, oh, if I take the bandage off or if I take the dressing off, is everything going to fall down? No. That's not gonna happen. You know, the muscles are surgically repositioned and everything is lying passively. Things are not gonna fall from gravity again. I'm expecting long-term results with this surgery. The post-operative period is usually quite simple. And most of my patients, if not all of them, are very comfortable after the surgery and breeze right through it. And with the help of the homeopathic medicines that I like to keep my patients on, most if not all of the swelling and the mild bruising is usually gone within just a short couple of days.

Let's Talk Laser Lipo on Face, Jowl and Neck - Bradenton FL

One of the interesting things that I've noticed, and I perform all the time in my practice, is most people just sort of think of liposuction for the body, for the breast, for the arms, for the hips, the thighs, and also underneath our chin.

One of the great places to do laser liposuction is around the jaw line and even on the face. I'm doing areas on the face around the jowl areas here, on the neck, right along the jaw line here, sometimes even up along these creases here around our nose and around our cheeks. The fiber is so small, that one millimeter fiber, that I'm able to get into those areas and the heat from the laser-- it's not really that we want to emulsify the fat in these areas. We're really going for skin shrinkage.

Around the jaw line, it's great because if you emulsify the fat just underneath the skin, you could really see that jaw line, that crisp jaw line come out, and it really works well for underneath this area called the submental area. It really helps contract the skin and gives results that are amazing. People love them.

But also where I found that it works really nicely is in the jowl area, which are these sort of saddles that sort of hang down as we get older right here. We're able to emulsify the fat, because the jowl is actually a fat pocket. So, we're able to help liquify the fat that's there, but also, the heat generated by the laser helps shrink the skin there, and we're able to accurately help shrink those pockets of fat without having to do a facial surgical procedure, and people love that.

This is a great medium for people that are looking to have something done, don't really have the money to spend for a facial cosmetic surgery for the Smart Lift or the face lift, but they want something done to help improve, but they don't want something more drastic. And this is a great opportunity because it's such a small one-millimeter canula. It doesn't hardly do anything. There's hardly no bruising. There's very, very little if any, down time, and the skin gets to tighten over the next six months.

One of the biggest concerns that patients have when they sort of look into cosmetic surgery in general, whether it be for the face, the breast, the body, is do I have to go to sleep. Some people are just very, very afraid of general anesthesia.

Now, general anesthesia is a very safe procedure. But as far as I'm concerned, I think the safest way to do cosmetic surgery is with either a light conscious sedation or with a deep sedation. Now, what does that mean? That means that we start an I.V., we give you medicines that make you very, very relaxed, and you sort of drift in and out of sleep. But overall, you're not bothered by the surgery, because you're so relaxed that you basically just snore through the procedure. And this is just a wonderful way to do it because my patients appreciate the fact that they're gonna be breathing on their own the whole time. They are very, very comfortable. They're being watched by an anesthesia professional. So, there's no me do the surgery and also the anesthesia. It's, I do the surgery and an anesthesia professional will do your anesthesia. And most people are very, very comfortable with that. And once you take the anesthesia out of the picture, there's very, very little anxiety associated with just having the surgery done.

And one of the nice things in addition to that, and the reason why I'm so successful at doing this, is because when we put you to sleep in terms of when we make you relaxed and you drift off to sleep, I use a lot of local anesthesia. And that's the reason why you stay so comfortable, because none of this will hurt. You don't really care about what's going on, because you're basically just, you may feel a little bit of pressure here and there, but you don't know what's going on, you're not aware, you don't hear things, you just sleep very gently through the whole procedure.

And the wake up is almost immediate. Once we stop the medicines that put you to sleep, that make you relaxed, you're awake within 30 seconds to a minute and a half.

So, you can imagine that before we even put on your dressings, you're talking, and you're-awake. So, most people feel really, really comfortable about that and they really, really appreciate the way that we do anesthesia here at Sarasota Surgical Arts.

Life has a way of racing by so quickly every day, and you're so involved in what you're doing, you don't really take a good look. When you sit down to put your make up on in the morning, you have an agenda. And so, you want to look good, and you don't really take a real good look at yourself. But over the years, as times gone on, I think I've-- my face has been fighting with gravity. And I began to notice my jaw line wasn't the same as it used to be. My chin changed shape, and it kind of worried me. I said, where did my chin go? And so, I knew that the time was drawing near for me to do something, because I wasn't feeling good about myself anymore. When I looked in the mirror, I saw that I didn't look the same as I had years before, and, of course, that's natural, but I want to feel good about myself, and I know that if I have something done and people come up to me and just say, "You look terrific. What did you do to yourself?" I'll say, "That's what the effect that I wanted to have!" I don't want someone to say, "Oh, you had something done." No. I just want them to think that I'm healthy and looking good. Because I care about the way I look. But nothing artificial.

And that is what I got with Doctor Sessa. The natural look. The day of my surgery, I came and was immediately greeted by the staff. They came right out the door after me, and I felt so special. I had had surgery treatment before and never got that kind of treatment. So, right away, I felt comfortable, and I went into the room after I had changed my clothes, and the nurses and the doctor came in and told me up front everything that they were going to be doing to make me comfortable, which they did. I felt nothing. I was happy and smiling. And the next thing you know, I was awake again, and everything was finished, and it was amazing. Before I had closed my eyes, I scanned the room, and I saw the equipment and knew that everything was going to be fine, because their state-of-the-art machinery that they had there really just let you know inside that it's okay, and that's how I felt. I felt good. And when I woke up, I felt nothing except excited, because I couldn't wait for the results, what I could see in the mirror when I would go home exactly what I'd be looking like. And so, I was very happy with that. And that evening, the doctor called. Great bed side manner, because you don't get a doctor calling you in the evening, but he did. And I told him I was very satisfied, and I was feeling fine. I still was a little sleepy, so I was just dozing on and off, but everything worked out well for me. And I'm very happy that I've had this done. The first week after I had the surgery, I came in and actually got to take a good look at my face while I was here at the Surgical Arts Center, and it was just amazing. Totally amazing. I saw my jaw line, and I saw the chin I used to have when I was younger that I kind of lost in the shuffle somewhere in all those years, and my neck was smooth.

No more the turkey jowls or anything like that, and I just got so excited. My husband walked in the room, and from that point on, every time he walks in the room, he says, "Hey, Youngy, how you doing?" So, he was very happy also. I know my best friend came to the house, and she said she had been looking at me very closely prior to me going in for my surgery. She took that close look, because she was contemplating doing the same thing herself. And so, when she came to see me after a week and a half, I turned around to look at her, and she just-- her eyes opened so wide, and she had a big grin on her face, and she said, "Oh, my gosh!" She said, "You look so fantastic!" And that just made me bubble up inside, and I knew then that I had made the right decision.

Face Lift, Smart Lift - I Felt Safe and There Was No Pain - Bradenton

You look in the mirror, and you're tired all of a sudden. But it happened so fast, so quick, where one month, you're okay, and then all of a sudden, one day you just look there, and it's amazing how fast everything just falls. But I guess it was going slow, but it finally got to the point where I noticed. But also, I looked more like my mother, you know? Which is fine. I mean, my mother was a lovely woman, but I think what happens when your face falls, at least at the bottom of it, you know, when the bottom part here falls, it just gives you an angry look where, when your face is in repose, you just look angry. I mean, it just-- everything's drawn. And it just-- it doesn't give you confidence. You don't have the confidence that you had before, you know? That you find that that's kind of diminished.

So, I went to talk to some doctors, did my research. I found Doctor Sessa on the internet, which was kind of something. Usually you get referrals or something, but I was kind of impressed with the interviews that he did on Channel 7. And I came and I spoke with him, and he was just very, very nice. Just a lovely person. He listened to you, and he didn't, like, try to tell you, you need this, you had to have that, you know? He just listened to what you wanted, which was good because I didn't feel forced or pushed or anything like that, where some other people just give you a much harder sell, you know, which I didn't care for.

So, I decided that the Smart Lift was the way to go. And I did a lot of research. I mean, I think I was on that internet looking at all these different procedures. But this, I liked. I liked the way he explained it, and he did it a little differently than everyone else. So, I did it, and the procedure was really good.

You came here, and it's a wonderful facility, and I liked also the idea that he had his own operating room so there wasn't a lot of different procedures and different types of operations going on there. So, that kind of felt safer to me. The people that worked for him are wonderful. The nurse, the people at the desk-- just really very nice and supportive, and I just felt very, very safe. And I had twilight, which was great because it wasn't complete anesthesia. It was this twilight. And I didn't know what happened! I mean, it just really put you out, but it doesn't go through your system like the other does. And it didn't hurt. And when I was done, there was no pain. I think I took the pain pills for maybe one night, and that was it. Absolutely no pain. And I healed rather quickly. There is no scarring at all. Absolutely nothing. So, I'm very happy, and it's four months out, and I'm still happy! And I don't look tired anymore, you know? And so, it accomplished what I wanted.

Facelift Mini-lift - Had Jowls and Looked Tired - Bradenton

I had noticed over a period of time that my jowls started to drop, and I would look in the mirror, and it didn't look like me. I started to look a lot older than I was feeling, and my face looked tired. The lines around the mouth here were getting really deep. And so, I wanted to get rid of all of that. I wanted to feel a little younger, a little fresher, and I chose to have a lift. So, I started to look around, and I saw two or three different seminars in town, and then I chose Doctor Sessa. The cost and the down time and the results are what I wanted after discussing it with him, and that's what we chose, chose to work with him. The recovery time was terrific. It was about a week of actual down time. I didn't leave the house. I used ice packs and whatnot to reduce the swelling and for comfort as well. I didn't take any medication, any pain meds at all.

It was not a painful experience. Within a week, I was back to work. The swelling was gone, and I didn't have very much at all of discoloring from bruising, so I looked pretty good at a week and went back to work. And I stopped and actually looked at my face and realized, the creases had decreased considerably, and the overall face looked a lot more awake, and I looked like I was refreshed, and I had a really good night's sleep. My fear was, you know, one of the fears I went into this with was that, you know, sometimes I see people, and their face looks a little stretched out and my fear was, what if that happens to me? The reality is it didn't look and doesn't look stretched at all. When I got an understanding as to what the doc had actually done, he did more work with the muscles under the skin than he did with the actual stretching of the skin, so the results were better than I could have anticipated. At 2 weeks, I had-- it was really terrific. At 2 weeks, I had dinner with my 39-year-old daughter, and I hadn't told her that I was having a mini-lift or what he calls a Smart Lift. And we had dinner together, and she never even noticed that I had anything done. The one thing she mentioned to me was that I looked pretty good with the extra couple pounds I had put on. But other than that, there wasn't a comment from her regarding the work being done. She didn't notice it. We didn't talk about it, and that was pretty exciting.

I was particularly pleased with the amount of scarring. I'm bald, basically. And you know, within 2 weeks' time, it was hard to see that I had had any work done. And here I am today at 8 weeks, and I don't believe it's visible at all. What I've heard from others, and it's all a direct result of the surgery that I had done, is that I look rested, that I look good, that I look healthy. And no one's noticed that I had some work done, which just adds to it. I get a smile on the inside when someone says, "Gee, you're looking pretty good lately." You know, that's kind of nice.

Oftentimes during my seminars, I get the question, so what can I expect in terms of down time for this procedure? And, you know, very confidently, I could tell people that, just like any surgery, there is 2 to 3 days of some mild swelling. Now, we also use medications to help reduce that. But just the nature of the Smart Lift itself, where it's less surgery and greater results, is the whole caveat that you're going to have a shortened so-called down time. So I think telling people generally 3 to 4, to 5, maybe even 6 days, 3 to 6 days is generally a quick recovery. Now, of course, recovery is sort of one of those loaded questions where, when I think of recovery, I'm thinking of laid up in bed drinking ginger ale. That's not it at all. You know, most of my patients are out and about the very next day. They are washing clothes, they are cleaning, they are cooking for themselves, doing things that they normally do. Walking around. They are not just sitting in a chair all taped up and bandaged up. Those are things that people really like to hear. Now, of course, the first day to 2 days to help reduce the amount of swelling, we need to keep certain bandages and some pressure dressings on your face so that you can recover even quicker. And I feel very confident in telling people 3 to 6 days is very, very reasonable. We're at the point of 6 days, 5 or 6 days, you may, in fact, be at work by that point. Or, in fact, going out for a light jog or going out for a bike ride at 6 days after your Smart Lift. I think that that's very reasonable. I leave a lot of this up to my patient. I think that most people are very intelligent, and I tell them use common sense. If it hurts or you notice something is sort of not right, don't do it.

The only thing I do tell people to avoid is no weight lifting. Nothing over 15 pounds or even 10 pounds. No bending over, lifting boxes, lifting heavy things, like heavy cleaning or heavy house cleaning work for at least a week. The second thing is, is tennis or golf. Nothing where you move your head very quickly from side to side. Those activities need to be avoided for probably at least 10 days. But otherwise, I think that people recover very, very quickly from the Smart Lift. But not only that, I can't really say that it's a quick and easy recovery, but it's very, very well tolerated. People tolerate it very well and that they come in and usually the first thing they say is, gosh, Doc, you know, I didn't have hardly any pain at all. I felt great. Then when they come in to get their stitches out, most of my patients even go further than that and say that they didn't have any pain at all other than some mild feeling of uncomfortableness just from the swelling and from wearing the bandages. But other than that, most of my patients get over this very, very well.

Face Lift Bradenton - Smart Lift Scars

Usually during my consultations, I often get the question of where exactly are my scars going to be if I have the Smart Lift? And I really take pride in telling people where the scars are going to be. First, there's going to be a small scar hidden underneath our chin that's usually imperceptible. Secondly, there's some scars that are going to be around our ears in well-hidden places. We start out in the hair line right by your sideburn, and the reason we start out there is because I found that if I create a certain scar, that the hair will actually grow through it, and it will become almost invisible after about a month to a month and a half. Then we use the contours of the ear to create the rest of the scar. And I like to keep the scar inside and hidden as well as well as I can. Then we turn the corner and sort of end the incision, and the scar ends right behind our ear lobe. That's pretty much the end point for the Smart Lift where our scars are going to be. And what's really nice about this and what people really appreciate and what I really enjoy is that I don't have to extend it back into peoples' hair line, and that is something that is usually part of the traditional face lift that I've sort of gotten away from. And by doing so, I've seen that, a lot of times, that area has very little blood supply sometimes, so you can actually end up getting some scarring problems as well as some hair loss. So by moving away from that, I avoid all of those issues. Plus, a lot of times there's a potential to have hair loss. And you know, people really appreciate the fact that we're moving away from that, but less surgery, less swelling, quicker down time, quicker recovery. And this is really the area that we see a lot of the magic, because people will come back after 10 days, even a week and a half to even at a week, and say, "My God, I can't even see my scar anymore. It looks wonderful." And I really take pride in giving people highly esthetic scars. I think that that is the trademark of a really proficient and a good surgeon is giving people quality scars. I really don't want people to walk around seeing a scar and saying, "Oh, you must have gone to see Doctor Sessa." I don't want people to say that. The best compliment anyone could pay me is if somebody says no one's even come up to me and said that I've had surgery. They just look like I've had my hair done or I maybe lost a few pounds. And those are the best compliments that people pay me. I don't want somebody to say, "Geez, you look like you've had surgery."

Face Lift - Turkey Neck, Jowls, Smart Lift - Bradenton

A lot of times during my consultations-- and I really pride myself on being very upfront with patients and being very honest. People come to me because they know, and I've gained the reputation of being very honest with my patients, telling them exactly what I think that they need whether it's what they want to hear or not. And one of the questions I usually see is-- one of the main complaints, I should say, is, "Doc, over the last 10 years, or 5 years, or even sometimes the last few years, the folds around my mouth are getting deeper, and I'm starting to get deeper creases at the corners of my mouth. Or these things over here, they are starting to sag down. And the upper part of my neck, I'm starting to see these lines in my neck. I don't like this so-called turkey gobble." And the great thing about it is when I hear these complaints, I know you're a great candidate for the Smart Lift immediately, and I tell them. And when I show them in the mirror what is possible, they just perk up, and they love hearing it.

The wonderful thing about this procedure is that, not only have I decreased the surgery time that it takes to do a traditional face lift, so something like this is usually done in about an hour and a half or so - but that people really, really love that aspect as well - but one of the great things about the Smart Lift is that all these problem areas around the jowls and the deeper lines in our mouth is sort of-- I'm able to use peoples' anatomy. And what I do is, I'm able to move the anatomy back into the position where it used to be. If we were able to take a picture of us standing upside down, we would see that gravity is actually a real big part of how we age. The skin thins, we loose collagen, we loose water, and then our skeleton doesn't change. So, it just starts to hang on a skeleton that used to be plump. So, once we replace the anatomy into its normal position, people see this during the consultation as I move their facial structures around, and they love it. They love the way it looks. And the thing that's so wonderful about this procedure is that, if you're worried about your jaw line or the jowls or the corners of your mouth or the upper part of your neck, the so-called turkey goblet, this procedure is great for that, because we're able to move the anatomy in such a direction that it recreates things that, where it was 10, 15 years ago, and create that youthful, strong jaw line that everyone loves to have and that we sometimes lose as we age, sort of starts to blend with our neck and our face, and we sort of lose that crisp jaw line that's so esthetic. And the wonderful thing about this procedure is that we regain it, we recapture that jaw line, and that's one of the things that people love. The things that's also wonderful is that I've noticed in that moving the anatomy to a more normal and natural position, it creates a more fullness in our cheeks. And that's something that also is one of the things that's great about the Smart Lift, because as we age, we sort of get sunken in underneath our cheek bones because all that skin starts to fall down and it sort of falls down right on these folds around our nose. So, what the Smart Lift does is it actually re-approximates the tissues and the anatomy to the normal position which should be just underneath the cheek bones, and people see a more fuller appearance afterwards, and they love that.

So, as we age, you may have started out when you were young with a nice heart-shaped face. And now that you're in your 60s, you have a square face. The great thing about the Smart Lift is that, when we re-approximate the tissues into a more natural position, you'll regain that nice, round fullness in your face again. Now, of course, it's all particular for everyone's anatomy and where you started from. I can't change someone's face completely. This isn't the Witness Protection Program. But on the other hand, I can help you regain the youthful appearance that you had maybe 10 to 15 years ago, and that's really all what people really want. You know, they say I'm okay with growing old, but I'm active, I love being out there. I love dancing and going out. All I'm looking for is to just look my age, and I don't want to look like an old person when I feel like a young kid inside. That's what I hear all the time, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to give people that youthful appearance that they had, because it transforms them, and it really turns people who are sort of shy and sort of reticent to being more outgoing and happy, and they are not afraid to go out in public or go to meetings anymore. So, that's one of the ways that I really find happiness in providing this service for people.
